Greenham Common

Site of a continuous peace demonstration on public land near Newbury, Berkshire, UK, outside a US airbase. The women-only camp was established in September 1981 in protest against the siting of US cruise missiles in the UK. The demonstrations ended with the closure of the base. Greenham Common reverted to standby status, and the last US cruise missiles were withdrawn in March 1991.

The number of women at the camp, which became a focus for the peace and women's movements, varied from around 40 (in October 1987) to many thousands at the annual gathering in January. The protesters worked closely with the Cruisewatch organization monitoring the US Air Force's excursions with missile launchers to nearby Salisbury Plain.
