The reindeer of North America.

Caribou

City in Aroostook County, northeastern Maine, USA, on the Aroostook River, 32 km/20 mi from the New Brunswick border and 21 km/13 mi north of Presque Isle; population (1990) 9,400. Named after the animal plentiful in the area at one time, it is a shipping centre for the Aroostook potato region and a gateway to the Allagash and other recreation areas. Industries include potato and sugar beet processing, fertilizer manufacture, and steam and diesel generation.
