Greensboro

City and administrative headquarters of Guilford County, north-central North Carolina, USA, 77 km/48 mi west of Durham; population (2000) 223,900. It has textile, chemical, electrical, and tobacco industries. The city was founded in 1808 and named after Gen Nathanael Greene, commander of the American forces in the Battle of Guilford Courthouse (1781), which was fought nearby.

It is the home of several colleges including Guilford College (1837), Greensboro College (1838), Bennett College (1873), the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (1891), and North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (1891). Students at the latter initiated the civil rights movement's sit-in demonstrations at a downtown Woolworth's lunch counter in February 1960.
