Greenwich

Coastal town in Fairfield County, southwest Connecticut; population (1991 est) 58,500. It is situated on Long Island Sound, about 56 km/35 mi northeast of New York City, and near the New York state border. It is a residential area, with many recreational facilities, some light industry, and a growing service and corporate sector.

Greenwich was purchased from American Indians and settled in 1640 by agents from the New Haven colony. It was plundered during the Revolutionary War.
