Gregory, Richard Arman (1864-1952)

English scientist. His main interest was the popularization of science, and he was the author of several books on general science and school textbooks. He was knighted in 1919 and made a baronet in 1931.

Gregory was born in Bristol. He worked at Clifton College as a laboratory assistant, and studied at the Royal College of Science in South Kensington, London, where he became research assistant to Norman Lockyer, the solar physicist, founder and editor of the magazine Nature. Gregory became its subeditor 1893 and remained there until he retired 1939, having succeeded Lockyer as editor 1919.

He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society 1933. Throughout World War II he was president of the British Association, and he played a leading part in the foundation of the Norman Lockyer Observatory, Sidmouth.
