Grein, Jacob Thomas (Jack) (1862–1935)

Dutch-born British critic, theatre manager, and dramatist. He established the Independent Theatre Club in London in 1891 to stage quality plays that would not be performed in the commercial theatre, and so played an important part in the development of a progressive art theatre in England.

The Independent Theatre Club staged the first performance of Widowers' Houses in 1892, the first of George Bernard Shaw's plays to be seen in London.
