Grenfell, George

    0.04 sec.

Grenfell, George (1849-1906)

English explorer and missionary. In 1874 he went to Cameroon with the Baptist Missionary Society, and explored the country. Four years later he was sent to the lower Congo River, where he made an extensive survey. Between 1884 and 1886 he made several long exploratory journeys by steamer up the Congo and many of its tributaries, including the Ubangi River.

He was born at Lancred, Cornwall, England. During 1891-92 he served on a commission as a delegate of the Congo Free State, to determine the boundary line between that country and the Portuguese territory.
