Grenville, Kate (1950- )

Australian writer. Her novel The Idea of Perfection (1999), a modern small-town Australian comedy of manners, won the 2001 Orange Prize for women's fiction, and her historical novel The Secret River (2005), about clashes between Aboriginal and settlers' land claims in 19th-century Australia, won the 2006 Commonwealth Writer's Prize.

After graduating from Sydney University, Grenville worked in the film industry editing documentaries. She began writing short stories and novels when living in England and France. Her other novels include Lilian's Story (1985), Dreamhouse (1986), Joan Makes History (1988), and Dark Places (1994).
