Gresham, Walter Q(uintin) (1832-1895)

US jurist and public official. He served as federal district judge (1869-83), postmaster general (1883-84), and secretary of the treasury (1893-95). Having fallen out with the Republicans over tariff policy, he threw his support to the Democrats in 1892 and was rewarded by being appointed secretary of state (1893-95). Gresham was born near Lanesville, Indiana. A Civil War veteran, he was a friend of Ulysses S Grant
