Gretna

Town and administrative headquarters of Jefferson Parish, southeast Louisiana; population (2000) 17,400. It is situated on the west bank of the Mississippi River, opposite New Orleans. Gretna developed as an agricultural shipping centre, and is now a residential and industrial suburb of New Orleans. Manufactures include cottonseed oil, asbestos roofing, fertilizer, barrels, petroleum products, molasses, and commercial alcohol.

Founded in the early 1800s as Mechanicsham, it merged with McDonoghville and was incorporated as Gretna in 1913; in the 19th century the settlement had served, in the tradition of Gretna Green, Scotland, as a place where couples could marry quickly.
