Grey, Beryl (1927– )

English dancer. Prima ballerina with the Sadler's Wells Company 1942–57, she then danced internationally, and was artistic director of the London Festival Ballet 1968–79.

Her roles included the Black Queen in Checkmate and Odette-Odile in Swan Lake. She staged Giselle for the West Australian Ballet (1983 and 1989) and The Sleeping Beauty for the Royal Swedish Ballet, Stockholm (1986). She was awarded the CBE for her services to dance in 1973 and created a Dame of the British Empire in 1988. In 1997 she was presented with the Queen Elizabeth Coronation Award, given by the Royal Academy of Dancing to individuals in recognition of great contribution to the world of ballet.
