Grey-Thompson, Tanni (1969- )

British athlete. She won gold medals in the 100-, 200-, 400-, and 800-metre wheelchair races at the 1992 Paralympic Games at Barcelona, the 1994 world championships at Berlin, and the 2000 Paralympic Games at Sydney. She has also won the women's wheelchair event at the London Marathon on several occasions.

Wheelchair-bound as a child with spina bifida, she took up competitive athletics in her teens, winning a bronze medal in the 400 metres at the 1988 Paralympics in Seoul. She set her first world record in 1992 and since then has set others at every distance between 100 and 800 metres. Her performances at Barcelona earned her an MBE and the 1992 Sunday Times Sportswoman of the Year Award. At the Atlanta Paralympics in 1996 she won gold in the 800 metres, and at the Athens Paralympics in 2004 she won golds in the 100 metres and 400 metres. She was made a Dame in the 2005 New Year Honours List.
