Griffin, Merv (Mervyn Edward) (1925–2007)

US television presenter and businessman. Originally a singer, he appeared on The CBS Morning Show in 1956, then hosted game shows like Keep Talking for ABC. He hosted the Merv Griffin Show (1965–86), then developed the successful game shows Jeopardy in the 1960s and Wheel of Fortune in the 1970s.

He sold his game shows to Coca-Cola's Columbia Pictures Television in 1986, then acquired the hotel and casino company Resorts International. Although the company declared bankruptcy in 1989, Griffin continued to invest in real estate and built a billion dollar empire.

Griffin was born in San Mateo, California. He began his career as a singer, achieving fame with his single ‘I've Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts’ (1950).
