Griffiths, Martha (1912–2003)| US politician. A Democratic congresswoman from Michigan 1955–75, Griffiths was best known for her brilliant political manoeuvre in successfully adding sex discrimination as a prohibited act in the 1964 Civil Rights Act. She also successfully campaigned for equality in government pensions and secured social security benefit payments for women's heirs. She was widely acknowledged as having working harder in Congress for women than anyone had before. In 1983, sitting as the first woman elected as lieutenant governor, she was inducted into the National Woman's Hall of Fame. |
