Griggs, (Stanley) David (1939–1989)

US astronaut. During the Discovery space shuttle flight of April 1985, he conducted the first unscheduled extravehicular activity in preparation for a satellite rescue attempt. Griggs joined the Johnson Space Center in 1970 and was selected as an astronaut in 1978. He was killed in the crash of a vintage aircraft in June 1989.
