Grinnell

Town in Poweshiek County, central Iowa; population (1990) 8,900. It is located 23 km/14 mi east of Newton. It is a trading centre for the surrounding agricultural area, distributing and processing corn, dairy cattle, and poultry and manufacturing farm implements. Sporting goods, fertilizers, and gloves are also produced. Rock Creek State Park is 10 km/6 mi to the northwest.

The politician, abolitionist, and clergyman Josiah Grinnell founded the city in 1854. Grinnell College (1846; originally Iowa College) was moved here from Davenport in 1859, and has since played an important role in the community, housing about 1300 students. The merchant bank of 1914 by Louis Sullivan is a national historic landmark.
