US astronaut. One of the ‘Original Seven’ astronauts selected in 1959, Grissom flew the second Mercury sub-orbital mission in July 1961, and commanded the first crewed Gemini mission, Gemini 3, in March 1965. He died in the Apollo 1 spacecraft fire in January 1967.
