Groote Eylandt

Island off the east coast of Northern Territory, Australia. It lies in the Gulf of Carpentaria, and is part of the Arnhem Land Aboriginal reserve; area 2,260 sq km/872 sq mi. The main settlement is Alyangula; population (1996) 1,231. The island produces 2 million tonnes of manganese annually, 10 % of the world's total production.

Groote Eylandt was named by the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman in 1644. In 1979 the Aboriginal community became a self-governing Aboriginal Town Council. Entry to the island is only possible after permission has been obtained from the local Land Council.
