Grootfontein

Town in Namibia, 300 km/186 mi north of Windhoek; population (2001) 13,000. The town, which is a military base, is a centre for cattle ranching, and its industries include the processing of meat and dairy products and the manufacture of leather goods. It lies at the northeastern terminus of the railway from Windhoek, and is the centre for road links to the Okavango Delta, the San territory, and the Caprivi Strip.

A permanent settlement was founded here by Angola Boers in 1884, who made Grootfontein capital of the short-lived Republic of Uppingtonia.

Early in the 20th century a meteorite weighing 60,000 kg/132,300 lb and consisting of nickel and lead was discovered 19 km/12 mi to the west of the town.
