Gross, Chaim

Gross, Chaim (1904–1991)

Polish-born US sculptor and teacher. He taught at many institutions and was known for his wood and stone expressionistic figures, such as Strong Woman (1935). Gross was born in Wolow, Galicia (now Poland). During World War I he and his family fled to Budapest (c. 1914), and he emigrated to New York City in 1921, where he studied at the Educational Alliance Art School (1921) and the Beaux-Arts (1922–26).
