Grosvenor, Gilbert Hovey (1875-1966)

US publisher, named editor of National Geographic Magazine 1899. Its financial status was shaky, but Grosvenor soon transformed it to a mass circulation periodical through the use of colour photography from 1910. He also changed the parent body, the National Geographic Society, from a small scientific body to a national institution. As president of the Society 1920-54 and chair of its directors 1954-66, Grosvenor sponsored scientific expeditions all over the world.

Born in Constantinople to missionary parents, Grosvenor was educated at Amherst College.
