Groton| Town in New London County, southeast Connecticut; population (1990) 45,100. It is located 72 km/45 mi east of New Haven, on the east bank of the Thames River, opposite New London, and extending to the Mystic River. The town was first settled in 1649. Its economy has been dominated by shipbuilding since the 18th century. The town's other major business is a Pfizer chemical complex. There is a branch of the University of Connecticut at Avery Point, on the Thames. A monument in Fort Griswold State Park commemorates the 1781 massacre of Revolutionary militia by British troops. |
| Groton is home to the Navy's largest submarine base and to Electric Boat, part of General Dynamics and the township's economic cornerstone. The first US diesel-powered submarine (1912) and first nuclear-powered submarine (the Nautilus, 1954) were built here. |
Groton| Town in Middlesex County, northeast Massachusetts; population (1998 est) 9,200. It is located 22 km/14 mi west-southwest of Lowell. Settled and incorporated in 1655, it was destroyed during King Philip's War (1675–76) and later rebuilt. It has ski areas, some light manufacturing, and some agriculture. |
