Built in 1893, the Old Fort functioned as a prison for most of its history, accommodating both routine victims of apartheid legislation, such as the Group Areas Act, and high-profile prisoners from the defiance campaign of 1952, the Treason Trial of 1956, the Sharpeville uprising of 1961, the Soweto revolt of 1976, and the several states of emergency during the 1980s. In 1966 it was declared a "white group area" according to the Group Areas Act of 1950. During the build-up to a famous speech in 1985, Botha appeared almost ready to take bolder actions, such as lifting the Group Areas Act and releasing Mandela. |
