Group of Rio

Organization founded in 1987 from the Contadora Group (an alliance between Colombia, Mexico, Panama, and Venezuela) to draw up a general peace treaty for South America as a ‘permanent mechanism for joint political action’. To establish the group the original Contadora members were joined by Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay. Presidential-level meetings are held annually to discuss regional issues, including foreign debt and drug trafficking.
