Grout, Donald J(ay) (1902–1987)

US musicologist. He studied at Syracuse and Harvard universities in the USA and in Strasbourg, France, and Vienna, Austria. He taught at Harvard 1936–42, and was professor of music at Cornell University, USA, 1945–70. Early opera and the works of Alessandro Scarlatti were at the centre of his research. His books include A Short History of Opera (1948, revised 1965), A History of Western Music (1960, revised 1973, 1980 and, with C V Palisca, 1988), and Mozart in the History of Opera (1972).
