Grove City v. Bell

US Supreme Court decision of 1984 dealing with sexual discrimination in publicly funded schools. Grove City College, a private school in Pennsylvania, refused to comply officially with laws prohibiting sex discrimination. Although as a whole it was not a direct recipient of federal funds, certain programs in the school received federal scholarship money. The government moved to withhold funds from Grove City under the Education Amendments 1972. On appeal, the Court ruled 6–3 that restrictions on sex discrimination could be applied only to programs and not to the school as a whole; federal action was to be taken only on a ‘program-specific’ basis.
