Grovlez, Gabriel (Marie) (1879–1944)

French conductor, pianist, and composer. He studied at the Paris Conservatory, later taught piano at the Schola Cantorum, and in 1939 became professor of chamber music at the Conservatory. He conducted at Lisbon, Chicago, and Paris, and from 1914 was director at the Opéra.

Works

operas Cœur de rubis (1906) and Psyche; conte lyrique, Le Marquis de Carabas; three ballets including Maïmouna (1916); symphonic poems ‘Dans le Jardin’, ‘Madrigal lyrique’; cello and piano sonata; pieces for wind instruments; Almanach aux images, Le Royaume puéril, two Impressions for piano; three Ballades françaises and other songs.
