Gruber, Francis

    0.01 sec.

Gruber, Francis (1912-1948)

French painter. He came to prominence after World War I for his austere realism, which gave a certain impressiveness to his sad and wasted figures and desolate landscapes. Job 1944 (Tate Gallery, London) is typical.

He was born in Nancy, the son of a stained-glass painter, Jacques Gruber. He studied under Othon Friesz, Charles Dufresne, and Henri de Waroquier.
