Gruenberg, Erich (1924– )

Austrian-born British violinist. After studying in Vienna he made his solo debut in Jerusalem in 1938. He moved to London in 1946, and was leader of the London Symphony Orchestra 1962–65, and of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra from 1972. He is well known as a recitalist, and has partnered Edmund Rubbra, William Pleeth, and William Glock; he recorded all Beethoven's violin sonatas with David Wilde. He led the London String Quartet and has been heard in works by Messiaen, Goldschmidt, Gerhard, and Britten.
