Grundheber, Franz

Grundheber, Franz (1937– )

German baritone. He studied at Indiana University and in San Diego. He has sung with the Hamburg Staatsoper from 1966, and has made many appearances in the USA. He sang Strauss's Mandryka at the Vienna Staatsoper in 1983, and performed at Salzburg in 1985 as Olivier in Capriccio (returning in 1989 as Orestes). At the Savonlinna Festival in 1989 he was Amonasro, and in the 1992 season he sang the title role in Berg's Wozzeck in Paris (at Châtelet) and Barak in Strauss's Die Frau ohne Schatten/The Woman Without a Shadow at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London. His recordings include Arabella (with Kanawa) and Wozzeck (on video from Vienna).
