Guánica

Town in Guánica Municipio, southwest Puerto Rico; population (1990) 9,300. It is located 29 km/18 mi west-southwest of Ponce, on the Bahía de Guánica and the Caribbean Sea. Settled in the 16th century around its natural harbour, it was the scene, on 25 July 1898, of the unopposed landing that led to US occupation of Puerto Rico. It has long been a sugar industry centre.
