Guadalquivir

River in southern Spain, rising in the east of Jaén province; length 600 km/373 mi. It flows by Baeza, Andújar, Córdoba, and Seville, to the Atlantic Ocean at Sanlúcar de Barrameda. It is navigable below Seville; parts of the river are bypassed by a canal near Seville, which has an inland port. It is very important for irrigation.

The Guadalquivir River makes a dramatic loop southward as it passes the city of Cordoba on its way to the Atlantic.
Seville's La Cartuja, on the island of that name in the Guadalquivir River, was built as the Carthusian monastery of Santa Maria de las Cuevas.
Sightseers and shoppers can meet again in the evening for a visit to the lively squares of the Barrio de Santa Cruz (the medieval Jewish Quarter) or the boardwalk restaurants, cafes and clubs along the Guadalquivir River.
