Guanare

Capital of the state of Portuguesa, in central Venezuela, some 350 km/217 mi southwest of Caracas; population (1996) 83,380. The town is a place of pilgrimage for many Venezuelans, containing as it does a relic of the country's patron saint, the Virgin of Coromoto. Guanare also trades in livestock, especially cattle.
