Capital of Guarda district, north-central Portugal; population (2001) 25,800.

Guarda

District of north-central Portugal; area 5,496 sq km/2,122 sq mi; population (1991) 187,800; capital Guarda. Agriculture is important, and wine is produced. Guarda is very mountainous, with the Serra da Estrela in the southwest.
