Guayama

Town in southern Puerto Rico, in the West Indies, roughly 55 km/34 mi south of San Juan; population (2000 est) 21,700. The town lies between the Sierra de Cayey and the southern coastal plain. The surrounding agricultural region produces sugar cane, tobacco, coffee, corn, and fruit. Guayama manufactures sugar, dairy products, spirits, clothing, furniture, and lenses. The town borders Jobos Bay, one of the finest protected shallow-water areas on the island.

Flash floods caused by Hurricane Hortense in 1996 claimed many lives in Guayama.
