Guelph

Industrial city and administrative headquarters of Wellington County, southeast Ontario, Canada, on the Speed River; population (1991) 88,000. It is the centre of an agricultural region; industries include food processing, electrical goods, and pharmaceuticals. It is the home of the University of Guelph (1964), which includes the Ontario Agriculture College (1874) and the Ontario Veterinary College (1862).

Guelph was founded in 1827 by John Galt, a Scottish novelist, and named after the family name of the royal house of Hanover. It was incorporated as a city in 1879. Guelph was the birthplace of the Canadian poet John McCrae.
