Guggenheim, Daniel (1856-1930)

US industrialist and philanthropist. As head of the American Smelting and Refining Company (1901-19) he extended its operations into Alaska, Africa, and South America. Among his many philanthropic interests, he subsidized free band concerts in New York City and promoted safe flying through the Daniel Guggenheim Fund for the Promotion of Aeronautics. The son of Meyer Guggenheim, he was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He studied embroidery and lace-making in Switzerland (1874-84) before becoming involved in the new family business of mining and metals processing.
