Guggenheim, Simon

Guggenheim, Simon (1867–1941)

US business executive and philanthropist. He worked for his father's large mining and metal-processing firm, eventually becoming president of the American Smelting and Refining Company (1919–41). Having settled in Denver, he served as a Republican representing Colorado in the US senate (1907–13). As one of the heirs of the massive Guggenheim fortune, he donated large sums to various educational and medical institutions. He is best known for setting up the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, which gives annual grants to scholars and creative individuals. The son of Meyer Guggenheim, he was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
