Gui, Vittorio (1885–1975)

Italian conductor and composer. He was a student at the Liceo di Santa Cecilia in Rome, was appointed conductor at the Teatro Adriano there, and later conducted opera at Turin, Naples, and Milan. In 1928 he founded the Orchestra Stabile (later Maggio Musicale) festival at Florence, and conducted operas by Spontini, Gluck, and Cherubini there. He performed at Glyndebourne 1948–64, leading Così fan tutte/All Women Do It, Macbeth, Alceste, Figaro, Die Zauberflöte/The Magic Flute, and Falstaff; he was one of the most important conductors in the history of the festival.
