Guilford County

County in north-central North Carolina; area 1,686 sq km/651 sq mi; population (1990) 347,400. It is situated in the Piedmont. The Deep and Haw rivers flow through the county. Its administrative headquarters is Greensboro. Industry, centred in Greensboro and High Point, two-thirds of the Piedmont Triad, is dominated by textile and furniture production. Other manufactures include chemical and pharmaceutical products, brick, clay, tobacco, and electronic equipment.

Guilford Courthouse National Military Park, to the northwest of Greensboro, is the site of a battle of 15 March 1781, in which the British Commander Charles Cornwallis won a Pyrrhic victory, which led the way to his eventual surrender at Yorktown, Virginia.
