William of Auvergne (c.1180–1249)

French scholar and theologian, born at Aurillac. He became bishop of Paris in 1228. He was a prominent scholastic philospher (or ‘schoolman’), and was one of the first to attempt a synthesis of the philosophy of Aristotle and Christianity. His main work was Magisterium Divinale/The Divine Teaching, 1223–40.
