Guipúzcoa

Province of the northern Basque Country autonomous community, northern Spain; area 1,997 sq km/771 sq mi; population (1995 est) 684,100. The smallest of the three Basque provinces, Guipúzcoa is situated on the Bay of Biscay and the French border, and is densely populated. There are numerous mineral springs and some zinc deposits here. Main products include textiles, chemicals, glass, paper, metal, and leather goods; stock-raising and fishing are important. The capital is San Sebastián.
