Guiteau, Charles Julius (1841-1882)

US assassin. He unreasonably expected to be offered a diplomatic post by the administration of President James Garfield, and when he failed in this pursuit Failing in this, he shot the president (1881), calling out, ‘I am a Stalwart and Arthur is president now!’ Despite behaving like a madman at his trial, he was found guilty and hanged in 1882. Guiteau was born in Freeport, Illinois. He dabbled in law, newspaper work, and preaching.
