Gulf Cooperation Council

Arab organization for promoting peace in the Gulf area, established 1981. Its declared purpose is ‘to bring about integration, coordination, and cooperation in economic, social, defence, and political affairs among Arab Gulf states’. Its members include Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates; its headquarters are in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

In January 2001, GCC leaders signed a joint defence pact, pledging to come to each other's aid in the event of attack. They also approved steps towards the creation of a common currency.
