Gulfport

City and administrative headquarters of Harrison County, southeast Mississippi, USA, on the Gulf of Mexico, 20 km/12 mi west of Biloxi and 109 km/68 mi east of New Orleans, Louisiana; population (2000) 71,100. It is a port of entry to the USA, and a major shipping point for lumber, cotton, and food products. With an artificially created sandy beach (45 km/28 mi long), it is a major tourist resort.

Gulfport was founded in 1887 as a railway terminus and incorporated as a city in 1904. Gulfport was in the path of Hurricane Camille in 1969, and suffered severe damage.
