Gumperz, John (1922- )

US linguist. A specialist in linguistic anthropology, his extensive list of publications includes Language in Social Groups (1971) and Discourse Strategies (1982). He studied at the Universities of Cincinnati and Michigan, gaining his PhD in 1954. He was subsequently a professor of anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley.
