Gunnison

Town and administrative headquarters of Gunnison County, west-central Colorado; population (2000) 5,400. It is situated on the Gunnison River, 225 km/140 mi southwest of Denver. It lies to the southwest of the Elk Mountains, west of the Sawatch Range, and north of the San Juan Mountains. Established in 1874, it was a mining and ranching centre. Today it is primarily a gateway to regional forests, ski resorts, and river recreation. The town is home to Western State College (1911).
