Guntersville

Town and administrative headquarters of Marshall County, northeast Alabama; population (1990) 7,000. It is situated on a peninsula in the Tennessee River (Guntersville Lake), 55 km/34 mi southeast of Huntsville. A Cherokee village until 1837 and a river port since the 18th century, it developed rapidly with the construction (1935-39) of the Tennessee Valley Authority's Guntersville Dam, 11 km/7 mi to the northwest. Guntersville Lake is now a major recreation area. Local industries include the manufacture of electronic equipment, textiles, clothing, animal feed, and precision tools.
