Guntur

Town in Andhra Pradesh state, east-central India, about 50 km/30 mi from the east coast; population (2001) 514,700. The town has become a major commercial centre, its activities based around agricultural processing; it is also an important railway junction.

Founded by the French in the 18th century, it was the capital of the region known as the Northern Circars.
