Gustavus Vasa (1496-1560)![]() Gustavus I (called Gustavus Vasa), king of Sweden, aged 62 years, in a painting from 1558 by W Boy. Gustavus Vasa was a wise man and a brilliant orator and letter-writer, but also a ruthless and artful ruler. He formed the first national army in northern Europe and established the Swedish navy as a formidable force. King of Sweden from 1523, when he was elected after leading the Swedish revolt against Danish rule. He united and pacified the country and established Lutheranism as the state religion.
